What is a HEIC file?

HEIC is the High Efficiency Image Container that iPhones and iPads use by default. It stores photos with HEVC compression, so files are about half the size of a JPG at the same quality.

Why can't Windows open HEIC photos?

Windows needs a separate HEVC codec to display HEIC, and many apps never added support. Converting to JPG sidesteps the problem entirely.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

JPG is lossy, but at Best quality the difference is invisible on screen and in print. Pick PNG if you need a pixel for pixel copy.

Why is the JPG bigger than the HEIC?
